Football or cooking? Preferably both.

Events in stadiums today are no longer only about football – in fact, modern football arenas are multifunctional event spaces. Berlin's Olympic stadium, built in the mid-30s, has recently opened a "Cooking Lounge". A large active kitchen with a direct view onto the stadium grounds. Miele equipped the Cooking Lounge with 41 high-end built-in appliances ranging from oven to wine conditioning units.

The Olympic stadium is steeped in history: It was built from 1934 to 1936 by the architect Werner March for the occasion of the 1936 Summer Olympics with a capacity to accommodate 100,000 spectators. The architecture of the stadium with its clear geometrical forms is based on ancient sports venues. Looking at the stadium from the outside, it does not however appear overpowering as it is partially built below ground level; only the upper ring is above ground level. In the 90s, when planning commenced for the football World Cup, new concepts for the stadium were called for. The building had also deteriorated and was in need of renovation.
From 2000 to 2004, whilst sports events continued, the stadium was reconstructed and modernised in accordance with plans compiled by the architect's office Gerkan, Marg and Partner. During renovation, conservation issues regarding the preservation of the stadium were observed. The old natural stones were sand blasted individually allowing 70% of the historic building to be preserved. The roof, covering all rows of seats and featuring blanket floodlighting which prevents shadows or semi shadows when used, is the most prominent feature of the renovated Olympic stadium. Formerly designed as holistic artwork, the grounds remain an urban monument. All necessary new buildings were located underground, outside the stadium. This made it possible to keep the original appearance.

Today, the stadium is also presented as a place for events. The recently opened Cooking Lounge offers space for events with a special character: up to 40 guests can be given the opportunity for hands-on cooking; show-cooking events can accommodate up to 100. The facility is exclusive and probably unique in Germany in terms of size and design: Kitchen furniture from Häcker in brilliant white and the glass fronts of Miele built-in appliances complement each other perfectly and form a well-balanced whole. Furniture and appliance handles are identical giving an overall harmonious appearance. Alongside simply supplying Olympiastadion Berlin GmbH with the appliances, Miele also acts as an agent for its 'Table Artists' and is instrumental for their engagements. The 'Table Artists' is an association of 40 professionally run cookery schools throughout Germany.
