Sustainability made transparent

Miele's 2011 Sustainability Report has achieved an enviable 7th position in the Institute for Ecological and Economic Research (IÖW)/future ranking published end of February. This represents a rise of 9 positions for the Gütersloh company compared with the last ranking in 2009, despite stricter criteria. At the same time, Miele is the only domestic appliance manufacturer to feature among the Top Ten – and also the highest-ranking family-owned company. 'With a focus on people' is the title of the most recent Miele Sustainability Report. 
The ranking covering sustainability reports published by the 150 largest German corporations is compiled bi-annually and jointly by the IÖW and the 'future e.V. ' institute. Results are based on a far-reaching catalogue of criteria which reflects all aspects of sustainability reporting. Among the mainly market-listed companies in the Top 50, Miele is one of only very few family-run enterprises. Positions 1 to 6, for instance, were occupied solely by DAX 30 companies (BMW, Siemens, BASF, Daimler, Bayer, Deutsche Telekom).
'A focus on people' is already the fifth sustainability report published by the company. Compared to its predecessor from 2008 ('Responsibility for Generations'), the current report delves even deeper and offers even greater transparency. The objective of Miele management is to report on sustainability activities throughout the company as close to the event and in as concrete terms as possible. And by the looks of it, the company has been successful in its endeavours.
